Habitats are places where players store frogs.
Habitat Characteristics
Each habitat holds up to 8 frogs or eggs, 8 scenery items for decoration, and a background image.
New Pocket Frogs players begin with a Nursery and one habitat with two frogs. Each time two frogs are bred an egg is added to the Nursery habitat.
As players increase their level they can purchase additional habitats. The cost for each habitat increases. The habitat number is in the center bottom when looking at a single habitat. Swiping right or left near the bottom of the display moves to the next or previous habitat. Touching the habitat number brings up a list display of all the habitats. In this view the habitat number is in light grey in the upper right of each habitat line. The Nursery is always the first habitat in the list and has the letter N as the habitat number.
Individual frogs can be moved between habitats by selecting a frog and then using the Move option. Entire habitats of frogs can be moved at a time by bringing up the habitat list view and touching the gear on the left of the habitat. An options menu appears where you can move all frogs, sell all unlocked frogs, gift all unlocked, tamed frogs, or lock/unlock all frogs. The "Move All" option moves all frogs regardless of tamed or locked status.
Each habitat has a background image which can be replaced by backgrounds found in gifts or purchased from the Supply Shop. Backgrounds have no impact except for the visual effect and cannot be sold or gifted.
Scenery increases the happiness level of the frogs in that habitat. Scenery items can be moved to another habitat, sold for a portion of their value, or gifted to other players. Select the item by a long touch on the item, then dragging it to one of the three options and waiting for it to be activated. Use the arrow for moving it to another habitat, the $ sign for selling, or the present for gifting to another player. Scenery can be found in gifts, purchased from the Supply Shop or received from other players and appear in the mailbox.
In the habitat display view frogs are ordered from left to right by age. The age of a frog is set when the egg is bred or when a frog is moved from the mailbox into a habitat. This order cannot be changed. To reorder the display the frogs must be re-bred or gifted to a neighbor who agrees to send them back in order to change their age.
If scenery items in a habitat overlap, generally the newest items are placed on top. Some scenery items are always below other items and some are always above.
Starting with version 3.6.10 of the game a Firefly can fly around the habitat at random times. Tapping on the firefly will give you a reward.
Habitats without VIP
When the Nursery contains 8 eggs or frogs no additional breeding can be done until frogs are moved to a different habitat. Eggs cannot be moved until they hatch.
A second habitat is unlocked when a player reaches level 2, and one habitat is unlocked every subsequent level until level 32. The maximum number of habitats is 33 including the Nursery.
Habitat with VIP
With the VIP Package, which can be purchased in the Pro Shop, eggs in the Nursery can be moved to any other habitat without having to wait for them to hatch.
A second and third habitat are unlocked when a player reaches level 2, and two habitats are unlocked every subsequent level until level 32. The cost of habitats is half the cost for non-VIP players. The maximum number of habitats is 65 including the Nursery.
Scenery and backgrounds found in gifts or purchased from the Supply Shop appear in the mailbox. With VIP the mailbox delivery time is half the normal time.
Backgrounds
Backgrounds have no effect on gameplay other than visual.

History
Before the VIP Package was available there were two separate items that could be purchased from the Pro Shop: the Express Mailbox and the Babyproof kit. The express mailbox reduced the delivery time for items in the mailbox by half, and the babyproof kit allowed eggs to move to other habitats before hatching. The VIP package incorporated both those benefits plus reduced the cost of new habitats by half.
