A frog's breed is one of the three key parts of a frog's appearance, alongside its base color and secondary color. Each separate breed of frog has its own unique pattern, which can be seen on their backs, legs, or full body, depending on the particular breed. For each breed of frog, there are 368 different unique colors, one for each possible type of base/secondary combination possible.
Rarer breeds are unlocked as the player continues to progress and level up. Every time a player gains a level, a few new breeds are unlocked for the player to discover. In order to have access to all of the breeds currently present in the game, the player must reach level 36.
Breeds are classified as either common, uncommon, rare, or legendary, depending on their level:
- Frog breeds unlocked between levels 1 and 4 are common.
- Frog breeds unlocked between levels 5 and 8 are rare.
- Frog breeds unlocked between levels 9 and 12 are endangered.
- Frog breeds unlocked from level 13 and after are legendary.
If a player is gifted a frog breed that is of a higher rarity than their current level, the player will still be able to use the frog within the pond, however, will be unable to breed or play minigames using it until the player reaches the necessary level. Despite this, the breed of frog obtained from the gift will still appear in the Froggydex as if it had been discovered.
Currently, there are 112 unique frog breeds which can be obtained. Most can be found in the pond, in presents, from fireflies, or from minigames. However, there are a handful of breeds which are Promotional Frogs, or POP frogs, which are obtained either by purchasing them in the FrogMart for 25 potions on certain days, or when they are gifted to the player.
